Finding Purpose in Difficult Circumstances

Hey Friend,

Today I want to bring you some encouragement to help you through difficult circumstances life can bring us. I want to start by asking you if you have heard the statement, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade”? I have heard this statement many times and I wanted to dive deeper into it. I found that this statement can be more than a cliche and helpful when broken down. Lemons represent sourness or difficulty in life. When you choose to make lemonade you are turning what is a difficult circumstance (the lemons) into something more purposeful (the lemonade). Now if you are like me you might be wondering how do you go from lemons to lemonade and what does that process look like. I want to give you my top 3 things I do to help bring purpose out of a difficult circumstance:

When difficult circumstances bring about negative thoughts I tell my circumstance that I DON’T SERVE IT, I SERVE GOD. Yes, I really do speak back to my thoughts. I’ve learned not to allow every thought to dominate my mind because my thoughts lead to my feelings and emotions.

After that I shift my environment by putting on some worship music. This simple action has helped regulate my mind more than I can say. Worship music gets my mind focused back on God and not my circumstance. (Side Note: if you need to cry while listening to worship then friend cry. I’ve cried many times because I was hurting so much BUT after I let it all out I picked myself up and reminded myself whose daughter I am, God’s!)

Lastly, I pray. Prayer is humbling. It reminds me that I cannot do life without God and that I actually need him! When you go into prayer go knowing that God hears you and that he not only hears you but he responds. He knows what you need before you even ask. As you develop a consistent prayer life you will find yourself trusting God more and more.

As I began to do these 3 things consistently I was able to see that my circumstance could have purpose if I wanted it to. Difficult circumstances have truly shaped my character. I turned many difficult circumstances (lemons) into opportunities (lemonade) to trust God, to depend on God, to draw closer to God and to build a prayer life. Now I live with my heart rooted in this scripture:

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:28 NIV

Friend, Life isnt easy but doing it with God makes it a lot easier.

Many Blessings,
